Media Policy
The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) understands that the media has an important role in informing the public about the work of the Commission and its function of preventing serious police misconduct.
The Commission can only provide information to the media if it is satisfied that it is in the public interest to do so. The Commission cannot comment on matters that are the subject of an investigation or confirm or deny that a complaint has been received.
Reports on Investigations
The PIC may choose to present a final report in relation to an investigation to the NSW Parliament via the Presiding Officers – the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and the President of the Legislative Council.
The PIC will make a recommendation to the Presiding Officer that a report should be available to the public. It is up to the discretion of the Presiding Officer as to whether each report is made public (s. 103 PIC Act).
Once a PIC report is made public by the Presiding Officer, the PIC will issue a media release and the report. The report will be posted on the PIC website.
